H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, paid an official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia on 27 June 2024 at the invitation of H.E. Mr. Sok Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The Thai and Cambodian Foreign Ministers held a bilateral meeting, during which they reaffirmed their commitment to working closely to further strengthen the bilateral relations and partnership between the two countries.

They were pleased with the positive trajectory of the overall relations between Thailand and Cambodia, which have been advanced by regular exchange of high-level visits and engagements at all levels and in all aspects.

Following the announcement of the upgrade of the bilateral relations to Strategic Partnership in February this year, both sides agreed to develop a joint plan of action to translate it into concrete implementation.

Both sides looked forward to the opening of the Royal Thai Consulate General in Siem Reap and the Royal Consulate General of Cambodia in Songkhla within this year.

On economic cooperation, both sides are committed to redoubling their efforts to ensure that Thailand and Cambodia are on track to reach the bilateral trade target of USD 15 billion, and that two way investment continues an upward trend.

They emphasised the importance of promoting closer connectivity between the two countries’ special border economic zones. They also shared the urgency of demining along the border areas to ensure that these areas are safe for development which will benefit peoples on both sides of the border.

They discussed ways to support the ongoing efforts of the two countries’ private sectors to reduce cross-border logistics costs by developing a rail freight service linking Thailand and Cambodia.

Both sides discussed specific actions to enhance tourism cooperation both bilaterally and regionally, including Thailand's proposal for the "Six Countries, One Destination" scheme, an update of the Agreement on Border Crossing to facilitate cross-border tourism, and extended duration of stay permit for tourists.

They expressed commitment to continue working closely to address transboundary issues, including online scams and PM2.5 pollution.

Both sides emphasised the importance of continued development and people-to-people cooperation. The Thai side expressed its commitment to supporting the construction of new learning facilities at the Department of Thai Studies at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and the Cambodian - Thai Skills Development Institute in Phnom Penh.

Both sides looked forward to activities to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2025.

During the visit, the Thai Foreign Minister also paid courtesy calls on Samdech Moha Bovor Thipadei  Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia. He also met with Thai agencies under Team Thailand in Cambodia and representatives of the Thai business community in Cambodia to exchange views on ways to enhance economic cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia.
