On 26 February 2026, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a discussion with H.E. Mr. Paulo Rangel, Minister of State and Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic, on the occasion of the latter’s official visit to Thailand.

Both sides discussed ways to promote trade, investment, and cooperation in high-potential sectors, including the digital economy, startups, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and labour. They also welcomed the conclusion of a visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic, official, or special passports between the two sides, which is scheduled to be signed later this year. The Portuguese side expressed its readiness to support Thailand in the negotiations for the Thailand - EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Thailand’s accession to the OECD. Both sides also agreed to further strengthen people-to-people ties, particularly in the areas of education, tourism, culture, and business exchanges, in order to build upon more than 500 years of historical connections and foster deeper mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries.

Both sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the situation along the Thailand - Cambodia border and the situation in Myanmar, reaffirming their shared commitment to multilateralism, adherence to international law, and the peaceful resolution of disputes amid an increasingly complex global landscape. They underscored the importance of close coordination within the European Union framework and other multilateral platforms to promote stability and sustainable development.

Afterwards, both sides held a joint press briefing following their discussions, emphasising the importance of economic and political cooperation. This reflects a shared commitment to promoting an open, transparent, and rules-based multilateral trading system, expanding market access, and enhancing trade and investment opportunities between the two countries. They also reaffirmed the important role of both bilateral and multilateral cooperation in further strengthening Thailand - Europe relations.

In addition, the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic also delivered a special lecture entitled “Portugal’s Global Perspective and the Defense of Multilateralism” to present Portugal’s vision and exchange views on multilateral issues, Portugal’s role on the global stage, and its perspectives on Thailand.
