On 4 December 2024, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, received a courtesy call by Ms. Ghada Waly, Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV) and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the occasion of the latter's official visit to Thailand, as guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Royal Project Foundation, to attend the Royal Project Foundation’s International Conference on the theme of “From Alternative Development (AD) to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Empowering AD to Address Global Challenges” between 1-2 December 2024 in Royal Park Rajapruek, Chiangmai.

During the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Director-General of the UNOV and Executive Director of the UNODC discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Thailand and the UNODC on combating transnational crimes, particularly narcotic drug, and cooperation on border management through the ASEAN Border Management Roadmap. The Executive Director of UNODC also commended Thailand's leadership role in alternative development.
