On 18 December 2025, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held discussions with H.E. Mr. Toshimitsu Motegi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the occasion of the Thai Foreign Minister’s working visit to Japan from 18 - 20 December 2025, at the Iikura Guest House in Tokyo.

Both sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations in response to global geopolitical volatility and agreed to work together to further deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in all dimensions.

In the area of politics and security, both sides expressed their wish to enhance dynamism by strengthening high-level exchanges, as well as exploring new areas of cooperation on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Japan in 2027. The Thai side also expressed appreciation to Japan for its assistance during the flooding situation in southern Thailand, and both sides agreed to promote enhanced cooperation in disaster management, humanitarian assistance, and the defence industry.

On the economic front, both sides agreed to cooperate in revitalising key traditional industries in the region, such as the automotive industry, while simultaneously advancing cooperation in new areas, including the space industry, sustainable green economic development, medical development, the semiconductor industry, rare earth minerals, as well as cooperation in human resource development and innovation, in order to respond to the transition towards a new economic era. In this regard, Japan expressed its readiness to support Thailand’s early accession to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in order to elevate business standards in Thailand to align with international standards, which would help Thailand overcome the middle-income trap and also benefit Japanese businesses operating in Thailand.

Both sides also exchanged views on regional situations, including the Thailand - Cambodia border situation, the situation in Myanmar, the South China Sea, the Korean Peninsula, and the Taiwan Strait.
