During 2-4 October 2025, a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Mr. Prasas Prasasvinitchai, Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Boundary Affairs, Member of the Thailand - Malaysia Land Boundary Committee (Thai Side), together with representatives from the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs and the Department of East Asian Affairs, conducted a field survey and held discussions with relevant local government agencies along the Thai - Malaysian border in Sadao and Na Thawi Districts, Songkhla Province, and Betong District, Yala Province. The delegation received technical and logistical support from the Royal Thai Survey Department, Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters.
The field survey aimed to assess the topographical conditions and management of border areas. During the mission, the delegation visited (1) the four areas exchanged between Thailand and Malaysia, namely Hok Tek Shrine, Guan Yin Shrine, Padang Besar Customs House, and a vacant area near Padang Besar Railway Station; (2) the road construction project connecting the new Sadao Customs House with Malaysia’s Bukit Kayu Hitam Checkpoint; (3) the single border management fences and the security fences along the Thai - Malaysian border; (4) Ban Prakob Customs House; (5) Betong Border Checkpoint; and (6) Highway No. 4244 (Betong - Sahoh) to study the old boundary pillars located off the watershed line and the condition of boundary pillars affected by road construction. The findings from this survey will serve as inputs for improving the management and development of border areas.
The field survey underscores the Ministry’s proactive role in advancing boundary survey and demarcation efforts with neighbouring countries, based on international law and geographical expertise. Such efforts contribute to strengthening border security, promoting sustainable border area development, and enhancing the well-being of the local communities. It also reflects the spirit of good neighbourliness and cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia in managing shared border areas.
