On May 20, 2024, Ms. Busadee Santipitaks, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Tharaka Balasuriya, State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, and met with Mr. Dharshana Perera, Senior Director-General, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, Colombo.

Both sides emphasised the people-to-people relations based on Buddhist connections and agreed to promote cooperation in several potential areas following the official visit of the Prime Minister to Sri Lanka and the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in February 2024, particularly in the fisheries and alternative energy sectors. Both sides also agreed to finalise the agreement on visa exemption for ordinary passport holders to enhance people-to-people linkages and to further promote the exchanges of technical cooperation in agriculture and animal welfare. Furthermore, both sides shared the view that the welfare of the Thai elephants in Sri Lanka is highly important, and that more cooperative measures will be needed.

Both sides further discussed the multilateral cooperation, including the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), as well as Thailand's candidacy for the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the term 2025-2027.

The Sri Lankan side also expressed their appreciation to the Thai government for assisting and facilitating the safe return of eight Sri Lankan nationals who were victims of human trafficking in Myanmar.
