On 27 January 2025, Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, met with Mr. Elias Wohengu, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.

Both sides discussed the progress of the establishment of the Embassy of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea in Thailand, a significant step towards stronger ties as the two countries approach the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations in 2026. They also discussed various areas of cooperation, such as trade, investment, tourism, development cooperation, and the possibility of a visa exemption agreement between the two countries, as well as ways to further strengthen relations between Papua New Guinea and ASEAN Member States.
