Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of Vesak Day and encouraged the international community to remember the Lord Buddha’s teachings in order to achieve a peaceful world in his pre-recorded video statement at the “Virtual Commemoration of the International Day of Vesak 2021”.

On 25 May 2021, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, delivered Thailand’s statement, via a pre-recorded video, at the “Virtual Commemoration of the International Day of Vesak 2021”. The event was co-hosted by the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the concept of the middle path in Buddhism is reflected in the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy or SEP which has become Thailand’s approach to sustainable development. Also in pursuit of the middle path, he also underlined Thailand’s implementation of the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy Model to pursue a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. He reiterated Thailand’s commitment to fostering cooperation in the context of the “SEP for SDGs Partnership” and the “BCG model” to other interested countries.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs further stressed that the teachings of the Lord Buddha, namely compassion and solidarity, have become even more relevant to our changing world and new global challenges. In this regard, he called on Member States of the United Nations to work in collaboration, not confrontation, so that collective actions can be taken with compassion and solidarity in order to build a more resilient, equitable and sustainable world.
