On 25 February 2022 H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, hosted a working lunch to welcome H.E. Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, who accompanied The Honourable Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Prime Minister of Malaysia, during his official visit to Thailand on 24 - 26 February 2022 as guest of the Royal Thai Government. The visit of the Prime Minister of Malaysia was an introductory call after his assumption of office, as is the practice among ASEAN member countries.

During the discussion, both Foreign Ministers agreed that the visit of Prime Minister of Malaysia, the first foreign leader to visit Thailand since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, is not only timely but also of high importance as it would provide an opportunity for the two leaders to meet in person to discuss ways to add impetus to the bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries.

The Foreign Ministers also discussed ways to strengthen Thai – Malaysian cooperation in the post-COVID-19 era amid many challenges and opportunities. Both sides agreed to expedite pending connectivity projects to achieve tangible results.

The two Ministers also exchanged views on regional issues and the role of ASEAN to address challenges including geopolitical changes.

H.E. Dato’ Saifuddin was Malaysia’s Foreign Minister in 2018 – 2020, during which the Thai and Malaysian Foreign Ministers held the most recent bilateral meeting between them in 2019.
