On 24 September 2022, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, met with H.E. Mr. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG), at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Mr. Guterres welcomed the excellent Thai-UN relations and close cooperation in various areas including advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals agenda which Thailand has played a leading role in the region. He also expressed his intention to work on the deepening of the Thai-UN relations in all aspects and thanked Thailand for being a good host for the UN offices. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs concurred with his remarks and reaffirmed Thailand’s pride and readiness of being the host of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and several other UN agencies.
Both sides discussed and exchanged views on various global issues comprising of climate change, situation in Myanmar, and the crisis in Ukraine. The discussion also included the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs’ proposal for key stakeholders of the Ukraine crisis to assemble at three venues in Southeast Asia - ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh, G20 Summit in Bali and APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Bangkok – to use the opportunities to talks towards exit to the crisis with possible participation of the UN.
Mr. Guterres has been serving as the United Nations Secretary-General since 2017 and was re-appointed for the second term on 18 June 2021. Before assuming the position of United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Guterres was Prime Minister of Portugal and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
