On 6 August 2025, Ms. Rujikorn Saengchantr, Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs, attended the workshop titled “Building an AI Policy Toolkit: Insights from Southeast Asia” at the Residence of the Ambassador of Japan to Thailand. This event marked the first workshop on Artificial Intelligence held between Thailand and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The event was co-hosted by Japan and the OECD, with participation from over 30 experts from government sectors across Southeast Asia, Japan, and the OECD. The objective was to encourage countries in the region to “co-create” global AI governance policies. The Director-General expressed appreciation to Japan for supporting Thailand’s OECD accession process and for advancing cooperation between Southeast Asia and the OECD, particularly in the development of AI policy. She emphasized the importance of international collaboration to prevent the misuse of AI, including in transnational crime and digital fraud.

This workshop reaffirmed Thailand’s role in promoting international cooperation between Southeast Asia and the OECD and is built upon Thailand’s recent role as the host of the OECD Southeast Asia Regional Forum, held on 2 May 2025. In addition, this also contributes to Thailand’s efforts to become an OECD member country. Ultimately, the OECD will incorporate the outcomes of the workshop into the development of the OECD AI Policy Toolkit, the world’s first comprehensive guide on AI-related policies, aimed to maximize the benefits of AI based on shared values and principles.
