On 24 April 2026, Ms. Rujikorn Saengchantr, Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs, had a discussion with H.E. Mr. Felipe de la Morena Casado, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Thailand.

Both sides exchanged views on enhancing Thailand - Spain cooperation in a comprehensive manner, in the economic and agricultural sectors, including expanding market access for agricultural products, particularly meat and fruit. They also discussed the topic of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, as well as Spain’s proposal on the application of the regionalization principle. The two sides also discussed progress on the Thailand - European Union Free Trade Agreement (Thailand - EU FTA) negotiations and the advancement of economic diplomacy to promote trade, investment, and private sector linkages. They also discussed cooperation in multilateral frameworks, emphasizing the importance of upholding a rules-based international order and promoting multilateralism as key mechanisms for addressing global challenges, particularly food security.

The Spanish side reaffirmed its support for Thailand’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as both sides recognized the potential to expand cooperation in capacity-building for Thai agencies, particularly in the agricultural sector, including through engagement with the OECD Committee on Agriculture in Paris. The Spanish Ambassador commended the steadily growing economic relations between the two countries, particularly in trade and investment, noting the increasing presence of Spanish companies in Thailand. The Spanish side also expressed its congratulations on Thailand hosting the IMF - World Bank Annual Meetings 2026 in October 2026, which will serve as an important platform to enhance Thailand’s role in the global economy.
