Thailand joins ESCAP Members to discuss ways to leverage digitali novation for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals

On 22 April 2024, H.E. Mr. Srettha Thavisin, Prime Minister, delivered a keynote speech during the opening ceremony of the 80th session of the ESCAP Commission (CS80) held under the theme “Leveraging digital innovation for sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific”. In his remarks, Prime Minister emphasized the Ignite Thailand” initiative in promoting Thailand's digital transition to a digital economy and financial system, and the importance of preventing risks arising from digital transformation, such as cybercrime. He also stressed on the importance of international cooperation to ensure a safe, equitable, and beneficial digital transition to all people in the region.

Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana,Executive Secretary of ESCAP hosted a luncheon for high-level delegates. Mr. Russ Jalichandra, Advisor to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, represented Thailand at the event. On the same day, H.E. Mr. Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara , Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Executive Secretary of ESCAP co-hosted a reception, showcasing Thai cuisine along with Thai cultural performances.

Ms. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, delivered Thailand’s country statement highlighting Thailand's use of digital innovation to promote economic and social growth. Ms. Pinsuda Jayanama, Director-General of the Department of International Organizations, was selected by ESCAP to serve as one of the vice-chairs of the meeting. Relevant Thai agencies made national statements under the related agendas of the meeting.

In addition, relevant Thai agencies participated in the “Digital Innovation Fair” to present Thailand good practices and exchange experiences on technology use and innovation and to enhance network as follows: (1) the Ministry of Public Health with the "Health Book" exhibition, which is an application to promote access to health data and services; (2) the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, presenting the "AI for Better Life" exhibition, which offers lung cancer screening using AI technology; and (3) the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, showcasing space technology for sustainable development. All three exhibitions attracted wide interest from conference participants throughout the week.

The 80th Commission Session adopted five resolutions and decisions on 26 April 2024, including the decision to hold the 81st Commission Session during 21–25 April 2025 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok under the theme “Regional cooperation for resilient and sustainable urban development in Asia and the Pacific.”, which will provide the opportunity for member countries to discuss approaches to developing resilient and sustainable cities.
