On 29 March 2023, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/77/276, requesting the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to render an advisory opinion on the obligations of States under international law in respect of climate change. In this regard, the ICJ has requested States and international organizations to submit written statements to aid its consideration of the matter. Although the ICJ’s advisory opinion has no legally binding force, it would significantly contribute to the promotion of international law by bringing legal clarity on the content of the existing law. This ICJ’s advisory opinion would also contribute to the development of international environmental law to better combat climate change.

In this connection, on 22 March 2024, Thailand submitted a written statement to the Registry of the ICJ. This written statement reflects the country’s commitment to address climate change and supports the peaceful settlement of international disputes based on the principles of international law.
