On Sunday, 13 September 2026, from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra, in collaboration with Team Thailand agencies in Australia, Thai businesses, Thai associations and the Thai community in Canberra and surrounding areas, organised the Thai Festival in Canberra 2026 at the Royal Thai Embassy.

During the opening ceremony, attendees observed 93 seconds of silence in remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother and watched the commemorative video, “Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother: A Legacy that Touched the World,” produced by the Department of Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.

The opening ceremony was honoured by the presence of Mr Andrew Barr MLA, Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and Senator Katy Gallagher, representing the ACT and Minister for Finance, Minister for Women and Minister for the Public Service, as Guests of Honour. They joined H.E. Ms Arjaree Sriratanaban, Ambassador of Thailand to Australia, in delivering remarks and striking the ceremonial gong to officially open the festival.

The ceremony was also attended by distinguished guests, including Mr Michael Pettersson MLA, ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs, and Mr Matt Gregg MP, Chair of the Australia–Thailand Parliamentary Friendship Group, as well as representatives of the Australian Parliament, the ACT Government, Australian government agencies, the Diplomatic Corps, Heads of Team Thailand agencies, the private sector, and Thai associations and community organisations.

The annual Thai Festival in Canberra aims to promote Thai arts, culture and the contemporary image of Thailand through Thai food and beverages, music, traditional and cultural performances, sports, and various aspects of Thai lifestyle and contemporary culture. The festival also promotes tourism and opportunities for economic, trade and investment cooperation between Thailand and Australia. Activities included tasting of Thai food and drinks, shopping of Thai products, cultural performances, Muay Thai demonstrations and children’s activities.

For this year’s Thai Festival, the Embassy presented Thai culture through the use of digital technology. Highlights included “Kru Muay Thai AI”, which introduced participants to Muay Thai knowledge and techniques and participants can try fighting with AI Muay Thai masters, and “Foody AI,” using AI technology to provide information about Thai food and Thai restaurants in Canberra, as well as participating vendors at the festival. An AI avatar “Nu Juk” was also created to add a playful element to the opening ceremony. These initiatives offered new perspectives on Thailand that attracted younger visitors and across different generations as well as Australian audiences.

In addition, the Embassy presented an exhibition on “Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom” (Royal Thai Dress), showcasing information on the history, development and distinctive characteristics of Thai national dress. The exhibition also highlighted Thailand’s nomination of “Chud Thai” for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. A commemorative video showcasing Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s contributions to the preservation and promotion of Thai dress was also screened. Visitors were also invited to use their mobile phones to create “Chud Thai AI” images of themselves wearing Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom. The activity received a lot of interest among participants.

The Thai Festival in Canberra has continued for more than two decades and been anticipated as one of the important events in the city to promote Thailand and Thai culture, connecting people, and fostering greater mutual understanding between Thailand and Australia. This is particularly significant in Canberra, where a multicultural community, cultural diversity and community participation are embraced and celebrated.
