On 24 February 2025, the Department of International Economic Affairs organised a Lunch Talk on “Thailand’s BRICS Partnership” at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. The event was chaired by H.E. Mr. Chutintorn Gongsakdi, Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. Keynote addresses were delivered by H.E. Mr. Evgeny Tomikhin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Thailand, and Mr. Matias Antonio Senra de Vilhena, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Thailand, as representatives of the host countries for the BRICS chairmanship in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

This event was the first BRICS-related activity organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand since the country has become a partner of BRICS on 1 January 2025. Its objective was to raise awareness among government agencies, the private sector, academia, and the media about the role of BRICS in the international arena and opportunities for Thailand to strengthen cooperation with BRICS members and partners.

On this occasion, the Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand underscored Thailand’s commitment to enhancing cooperation among developing countries. He highlighted Thailand’s role as a bridge builder among various international groupings and exploring new opportunities for collaboration with BRICS nations, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, innovation, development, and tourism. Meanwhile, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Thailand provided an overview of BRICS's mechanisms, its significance, and the role of partner countries in strengthening cooperationin areas of shared interest. The Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Brazil
in Thailand discussed the central theme of Brazil’s BRICS Chairmanship, “Strengthening the Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”. Approximately 90 representatives from various sectors attended the event.

BRICS is a coalition of high-potential developing countries, comprising of 10 member countries and 9 partner countries. Thailand has been actively engaged with BRICS through the BRICS Plus mechanism since 2017 and, since 1 January 2025, has become a partner country of BRICS.
