Prime Minister of Thailand congratulated the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Relations and emphasised enhancing cooperation in all dimensions especially on public health, R&D of vaccines and medicines, economic security by using technology and digital economy for a resilient and sustainable recovery at the 24th ASEAN-China Summit.

On 26 October 2021, H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of Thailand, participated in the 24th ASEAN-China Summit via videoconference. The Meeting welcomed the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Relations and agreed to convene the ASEAN-China Special Summit in late November this year. In addition, the Meeting discussed ways to address the new surge of COVID-19 and other challenges, as well as to promote socio-economic recovery for better people’s livelihood and regional prosperity.

The Prime Minister presented that Thailand is advancing into the “Next Normal” through “reinventing Thailand” and stressed the necessity of international cooperation to address common challenges and move towards a secured future together. With regard to health security, the Prime Minister reiterated cooperation on R&D of safe and effective vaccines and medicines, skills development of medical personnel, as well as improvement of S&T and related innovation, with a view to promoting public health preparedness for further crises.

On economic security, the Prime Minister highlighted adherence to a free and open multilateral trading system, strengthening of supply chain resilience, and expediting an early entry into force of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The use of technology and digital economy was emphasised as the key for conducting businesses and enhancing potentials of MSMEs, start-ups and local entrepreneurs as well as people’s livelihood under the new normal. The Prime Minister also encouraged resumption of safe travelling of people, including business persons, tourists and students.

The Prime Minister also welcomed activities under the ASEAN-China Years of Sustainable Development in 2021-2022 and invited countries to explore cooperation on Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy Model. The Prime Minister also highlighted the role of Thailand as the ASEAN Coordinator for Sustainable Development towards inclusive recovery and growth.

The Meeting exchanged views on recent developments in the region, including the South China Sea. The Prime Minister reiterated Thailand’s constructive role in promoting win-win cooperation, such as maritime environmental protection. He also emphasised Thailand’s strong commitment to continuing the negotiations on a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC) that is effective, substantive and in accordance with international law.

The Meeting adopted 2 outcome documents, namely (1) ASEAN-China Joint Statement on Cooperation in Support of the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework; and (2) ASEAN-China Joint Statement on Enhancing Green and Sustainable Development Cooperation.
