The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand attended the ASEAN-Australia Ministerial Meeting where he stressed the importance of the ASEAN-Australia Strategic Partnership and advocated cooperation on the COVID-19 response and economic recovery, especially on public health and vaccine as well as cooperation on science, technology and innovation to promote Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy.
On 4 August 2021, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, attended the ASEAN-Australia Ministerial Meeting via videoconference. The Meeting discussed ASEAN-Australia cooperation in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, with great emphasis on dealing with new variants, and on sustainable post-COVID-19 recovery. ASEAN welcomed Australia’s proposals and initiative, including an ‘ASEAN-Australia One Health Fellowship’ Programme, which provides scholarships to health officials from ASEAN, and an ‘Australian Science and Technology for Climate Partnerships’ Initiative to promote research-based solutions and innovation in the region. The Meeting also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in various areas, such as counter-terrorism, combating transnational crimes, counter-trafficking, cyber security and connectivity.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand highlighted the importance of the ASEAN-Australia Strategic Partnership for stability and prosperity of our region as well as sustainable post-pandemic recovery. While the importance of research and development and exchange of information on vaccines, including access to safe and effective vaccines for ASEAN and continuation of dialogue between health experts, were emphasised, Australia was also invited to explore region-wide cooperation under the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy Model through collaboration on science, technology, and innovation in areas such as bioenergy, circular economy through circular designs for products and packaging to promote green supply chain, and a whole-of-society approach amongst our youth on green skills and environmental awareness.
Importantly, Australia’s continued support for ASEAN centrality and its win-win cooperation, including under the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, will help steer the ASEAN-Australia Strategic Partnership to a new height.
