Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs briefed the diplomatic corps on the outcomes of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat

On 6 February 2026, H.E. Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, briefed the foreign diplomatic corps and international organisations in Thailand, in total of approximately 60 representatives, on the outcomes of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM Retreat), held on 28 - 29 January 2026 in Cebu, the Republic of the Philippines.

The Permanent Secretary underscored the significance of the AMM Retreat, the first ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting under the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026 under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together”, as an important opportunity for ASEAN to discuss its future direction at a time when the region and the world are facing multidimensional challenges arising from geopolitical and geoeconomic uncertainties, rapid technological advances, as well as growing erosion of the international order and the multilateral system. Adding to the Meeting’s shared view that ASEAN must work together to respond effectively to these challenges, Thailand presented three strategic perspectives, namely Regionalism, Resilience, and Relevance, as key anchors to enable ASEAN to adapt and maintain its role in the region amid a rapidly evolving international environment.

The Permanent Secretary highlighted key regional issues discussed at the Meeting, including the growing challenge of online scams, with Thailand reiterating its readiness to build upon the outcomes of the international conference hosted last year to further advance regional cooperation through ASEAN-led mechanisms. The briefing also covered discussions on ASEAN’s approach towards Myanmarin the post-election context, as well as the Thailand-Cambodia situation, during which the Foreign Ministers welcomed positive developments while Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to continued adherence to the ceasefire agreement and emphasised a forward-looking approach towards resolving the situation through peaceful means.
