During 26-30 July 2019, H.E. Mr. Mevlüt çavuşoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, paid a visit to Thailand as guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, on 30 July 2019, the two Ministers had a very constructive discussion on ways and means to enhance cooperation between the two countries, especially in areas of trade, investment, tourism, and security. They agreed that the ongoing FTA negotiation should be finalized at the earliest opportunity.
On the same day, the Turkish Foreign Minister participated in the Trilateral Meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the Secretary-General of ASEAN. The meeting agreed to strengthen cooperation with Turkey as a sectoral dialogue partner in areas such as sustainable development, digital trade and connectivity.
During his stay in Thailand, the Turkish Foreign Minister also visited Chiang Mai Province during 26-27 July 2019, where he had meetings with Mr. Supachai Lamsuwan, Governor of Chiang Mai Province and Mr. Varodom Pitakanonda, Chairman of Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce.
The diplomatic relations between Thailand and Turkey reached 60 years in 2018. Currently, Turkey is the 36th trade partner of Thailand with bilateral trade volume over 1.4 billion USD in 2018. Last year, 90,006 Turkish tourists visited Thailand and 54,098 Thai tourists visited Turkey.
Previously, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey has visited Thailand twice, in 2015 and 2016.
