          On 31 July 2019, H.E. Mr. Jaime Antonio Pomareda Montenegro, Deputy Foreign Minister of Peru signed the Instrument of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) during the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and Post Ministerial Conferences (PMCs) in Bangkok. The Deputy Foreign Minister highlighted Peru’s commitment to strengthen relations and cooperation with ASEAN.

          The TAC contains principles on promoting and sustaining regional peace and stability that was originally signed by the five Founding Members of ASEAN in 1976. It was subsequently open to all countries that have expressed their intent in enhancing their relations with ASEAN. With the inclusion of the Republic of Peru, the total number of High Contracting Parties to the TAC amounts to 38 Parties altogether, including all the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. The provisions of the TAC focus on the peaceful settlement of disputes and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

          The Republic of Peru is attending the 52nd AMM and PMCs as Guest of the ASEAN Chair.
