On 25 September 2018, H.E. Mr. Thani Thongphakdi, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand participated in the inaugural High-level meeting on Action for Peacekeeping (A4P), initiated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, during the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA73) in New York. During the meeting, Thailand endorsed the Declaration of Shared Commitments on UN Peacekeeping Operations along with 146 Member States and 4 international organisations (European Union (EU), International Organisation of Francophonie (OIF), African Union (AU) and NATO).
The Declaration renews the commitment of member states and relevant stakeholders in enhancing overall effectiveness of peacekeeping operations. More critically, it ensures coherence between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sustaining Peace Principle.
Since 1950, over 27,000 Thai Military and Police personnel, women and men, have proudly served in more than 20 peacekeeping and related missions of the United Nations. Thailand currently contributes troops, military and police components, to 3 UN peacekeeping missions, namely UNAMID in Sudan, UNMISS in South Sudan and UNMOGIP in India/Pakistan. At the end of this year, Thailand will deploy an additional Horizontal Military Engineering Company (HMEC) to join UNMISS in South Sudan.
UN peacekeeping has demonstrated the United Nations’ concrete role in maintaining international peace and security. An investment in UN peacekeeping is therefore an investment in our collective commitment towards peace and security.
