Following Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's victory in the leadership election of the Liberal Democratic Party on 20 September 2018, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, sent a congratulatory message to the Prime Minister of Japan as follows

      I wish to extend my sincere congratulations on your recent victory in the Liberal Democratic Party leadership election, which reflects the trust and confidence that members of the Liberal Democratic Party have in Your Excellency’s leadership. 
 
      I am fully confident that, under Your Excellency’s continued guidance and leadership, the long-standing and cordial relations existing between Thailand and Japan will be further strengthened and enhanced for our mutual benefit. I wish to take this opportunity to convey my best wishes for your continued success in all future endeavours, and I look forward to meeting with Your Excellency in the upcoming 10th Mekong-Japan Summit this October.
