During 27 – 29 June 2018, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and the United Nations Economic and Social Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will convene high-level conferences on South-South Cooperation comprising (1) Regional Consultation on South-South Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific: Towards the Buenos Aires Plan of Action 40th Anniversary and (2) Asia-Pacific Forum for South-South and Triangular Cooperation which will be attended by more than 80 high-level officials and representatives from 53 ESCAP Members States at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.

On 27 June 2018, Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs will deliver the welcoming address of the meeting alongside with  Mr. Kaveh Zahedi,  Deputy Executive Secretary of ESCAP, and Mr. Jorge Chediek, Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation and Director of UNOSSC.

The convening of the said high-level conferences is a positive sign of cooperation with agencies under the United Nations and among Member States of the ESCAP. Thailand, under the policy ‘SEP for SDGs Partnership’, has been working continuously with countries in Asia and the Pacific in the form of partnership
to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by applying His Majesty the late King’s Sufficiency Economy Philosophy  (SEP). This has resulted in increasing cooperation among developing countries or South-South cooperation to jointly achieve the SDGs.

Moreover, the regional cooperation conferences in Bangkok present an opportunity for developing countries to push forward and support the sustainable development agenda of Asia and the Pacific region. This will help strengthen Thailand’s role as a partner for South-South and Triangular cooperation with international organisations and member countries of the United Nations following Thailand’s chairmanship of G77, supporting Thailand’s role as ASEAN Coordinator on Sustainable Development Cooperation and the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2019.
