The Silk Route: From Thailand to Valencia

           The Royal Thai Embassy in Madrid, in cooperation with the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture, as well as the Queen Sirikit Department of Sericulture, Ministry of Agriculture of Thailand, organized the Thai Silk Exhibition at the College and Museum of High Silk Art in Valencia during 21 – 26 May 2018.

           The purpose of the exhibition is to honour Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen of His Majesty Late King Bhumilbol Adulyadej of Thailand, who attached much importance to the development and promotion of Thai silk.  Her Majesty had graciously granted the “Royal Peacock Seal” as the seal of quality guarantee for authenticity and high quality of Thai silk.  Furthermore, the Exhibition aims to raise awareness of Thai silk in Spain through providing knowledge and  showing the uniqueness and beauty of the Thai silk. 

           The exhibition, which welcomes approximately 150 visitors per day, includes various activities about Thai silk and Thai culture, ranging from the demonstration of  Thai silk reeling, workshop on different ways and techniques to dress with Thai Silk, Thai silk moulage, as well as Thai cooking demonstration.  In  the evening of 21 May 2018, there was a Reception with Thai food and fashion show of 40 Thai silk dresses designed by two well-known Thai designers. The event was attended by 250 guests, ranging from diplomatic corps in Valencia, representatives of the Valencia Governorate, private sector, artists, designers and media, as well as Thai community in Valencia.

          On 22 May 2018,  there was a seminar on Thai silk at Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño de Valencia (EASD), where Thai silk specialists and designers gave lecture on the characteristics of Thai silk, as well as techniques and inspiration for designing Thai silk dresses, to about 100 professors and students of the school.

           The exhibition is the first ever Thai Silk Exhibition in Spain and has been very well-received by Spanish and foreign tourists, who had learned about the Thai silk, which is the cultural heritage reflecting the Thai way of life as well as Thai local wisdom, it also enhances the already flourishing relations between Thailand and Spain, particularly the relations with Valencia, which used to be the important silk production city in Spain.
