Recognizing the universal value of the "Monkey Cheek" concept in reducing flood risk while building sustainable agricultural production and resilient livelihood, the Coca-Cola Foundation will work in partnership with relevant Thai agencies to promote this initiative in other countries along with H.M. the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej's "New Theory" integrated agricultural initiative to ensure food security in villages adjacent to the "Monkey Cheek" project.
Lao PDR will be the first foreign country where a pilot project is expected to be officially launched next year under a multistakeholder public – private partnership which includes the Coca-Cola Foundation, The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), relevant Thai agencies (TICA, HAII and Utokapat Foundation) and various Lao agencies.
A joint meeting was held in Vientiane on 6 December 2017 to kick start the pilot project located at Nathiem Village, Sangthong District, Vientiane. The project to be carried out under a "Monkey Cheek-plus" concept will consist of three important activities; (1) the construction of Monkey Cheek (water retention pond), (2) the installation of automated telemetry station and (3) the development of water sanitation.
The Coca-Cola Foundation is keen to be a partner for the integrated community water resource management known as "Monkey Cheek" which can be carried out and promoted overseas under triangular partnership. USAID with its policy to be a partner in ending extreme poverty and promoting community resilience is also interested in joining this pilot project in Lao PDR which will help improve the use of water for food security and the promotion of clean water and sanitation
