H.E. Mr. Virasakdi Futrakul, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, will attend the High-Level Segment of the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, from 27 February to 1 March 2017.

In this occasion, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs will deliver a statement at the High-Level Segment and meet with Mr. Robert Glasser, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, to discuss cooperation between Thailand and the United Nations mechanisms. In addition, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, together with Mr. Jorge Chediek, Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation and Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), will co-host the launch of the first volume of the South-South in Action Publication Series “Sustainability in Thailand: Experience for Developing Countries” as Thailand today plays a significant role as emerging donor country in the field of development cooperation among developing countries. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs will also open the exhibition
“The Lifetime Journey of the World’s Development King and the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy for SDGs” and will meet with heads of delegations of other countries to strengthen bilateral relations.

Since its inception in 2006, the United Nations Human Rights Council is mandated to monitor human rights situation worldwide, advocate for the promotion and protection of human rights, as well as contribute in capacity building in the field of human rights in many countries. Thus far, Thailand has been playing a constructive role in the Council as a member of the Human Rights Council from 2010-2013, during which time Thailand was elected to serve as the President of the Council in 2010-2011.
