On 24 May 2016, His Excellency Mr. Nopporn Adchariyavanich, Ambassador of Thailand to Sri Lanka, met with Honourable Mr. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, to present condolences messages of His Excellency General Prayut Chan-o-cha (Ret.), Prime Minister of Thailand, addressed to His Excellency Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, President of Sri Lanka, and of His Excellency Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, addressed to Honourable Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, for the tragic incident of floods and landslides in Sri Lanka. His Excellency Mr. Nopporn also informed Honourable Mr. Samaraweera that the Royal Thai Government was considering providing immediate assistance to the Sri Lankan people who were affected by this natural disaster. 

            On this occasion, Honourable Mr. Samaraweera expressed his sincere appreciation to the Royal Thai Government for warm friendship extended to the affected Sri Lankan people. Honourable Mr. Samaraweera added that this unfortunate incident caused far more damage than expected as the rainfall reached the highest level since 1992, which gave rise to widespread inundation and massive landslides, affecting more than 500,000 people in Western and Central Provinces, as well as high mountain areas in the South of Sri Lanka, and claiming a large number of houses and infrastructures.

            In addition, His Excellency Mr. Nopporn and Honourable Mr. Samaraweera exchanged views on the progress of cooperation in areas of trade and investment between Thailand and Sri Lanka, especially after the official visit to Thailand of the Sri Lankan President in November in 2015 and the visit to Sri Lanka of His Excellency Mr. Somkid Jatusripitak, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, in March 2019. At present, the business activities between the two countries have increased significantly, which will lead to higher trade volumes of Thailand and Sri Lanka.
