H.E. Mr. Han Zheng, Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Shanghai Municipal Committee and Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of CPC, visited Thailand on 10-11 May 2016 as guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visit aimed at further promoting the overall bilateral relations between Thailand and China and cooperation between Thailand and Shanghai as well as relations at local level between Bangkok and Shanghai.

On 11 May 2016, H.E. Mr. Han Zheng paid a courtesy call on H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Prime Minister and met with H.E. Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak, Deputy Prime Minister. H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs, also hosted a luncheon for H.E. Mr. Han Zheng and his delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the luncheon, both sides reaffirmed the longstanding friendly relations between Thailand and China, and agreed that Thailand and Shanghai have the potential to further enhance the bilateral cooperation in many areas such as economic, trade, investment, tourism and culture, etc.

They also exchanged views and experiences on national reform, development and economic structure adjustment with the emphasis on innovation. The Thai side recognized the important role of Shanghai to China’s economy and commended its successful development in becoming a smart city of China and the world. H.E. Mr. Han Zheng invited the Deputy Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister to visit Shanghai to further discuss and move forward the bilateral cooperation between Shanghai and Thailand.  

The delegation also had the opportunity to meet with the Thai companies investing in Shanghai and Shanghai companies investing in Thailand. A special Cultural Performance from Shanghai was also on show at the China Cultural Center in Bangkok.    

To further fostering relations between Bangkok and Shanghai, after the meeting with the Governor of Bangkok, both sides signed the Agreement on the Establishment of the Friendship Cities between Bangkok and Shanghai.
