H.E. Mr. Don Pramudvinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs will accompany the Thai delegation led by H.E. General Prayuth Chan-o-cha (Ret.), Prime Minister of Thailand along with H.E. Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister of Science and Technology to attend the 4^th Nuclear Security Summit during 31 March -1 April 2016 in Washington D.C. at the invitation of the Honourable Barack Obama, the President of the United States of America. 

The Summit will see the gathering of over 40 Heads of States from 52 invited countries and heads of 4 international organizations which play the leading roles in nuclear security including the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and the European Council. The Prime Minister’s participation in this Summit will reaffirm Thailand’s strong political will in the promotion of nuclear security. This is a global issue currently catching the world’s attention, particularly   amidst the changing political and economic landscape with increasing use and wider applications of nuclear energy. Thai relevant agencies will have the opportunity to further strengthen their network of cooperation and put into action what the leaders will agree at the Summit, particularly sharing of knowledge, information and intelligence, as well as capacity building and technology transfer in order to further improve nuclear security for the benefits of all.

Although Thailand is not a nuclear weapon state, Thai people have benefited from extensive and peaceful applications of nuclear technology in daily life, ranging from healthcare and medical treatment, agriculture, industry, environment, and study and researches. Facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, factories, and universities which possess nuclear and radioactive materials must be regulated in their acquisition, use, storage, disposal, and management in line with international standards.  These measures will ensure their security from smuggling or accidents as a result of ignorance or negligence, as well as to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands for malicious purposes, in order to prevent and mitigate potential risks and impacts on health, environment and security. These issues are the highlight of this Summit which Thailand has attended since 2010. The Thai authorities have also conducted awareness raising and outreach activities to educate the general public on nuclear security.
