On 12 February 2016, Mrs. Sutthiluck Sa-ngarmangkang, Consul-General of Thailand to Vancouver, met with Ms. Melissa Flett, Acting Director of Wood Buffalo Regional Library in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The purpose of this visit was to promote collaboration between the Royal Thai Consulate-General and Wood Buffalo Regional Library in Fort McMurray which included the possibility of establishing a Thailand Corner at the library in the near future. The meeting was attended by Mr. Narat Vidyananda, Consul, and librarians of the Wood Buffalo Regional Library concerned.

On this occasion, Ms. Flett, the Acting Director, warmly welcomed the Consul-General and informed that she and the Library’s staff had followed the Consulate-General’s activities, particularly the establishment of Thailand Corners at various locations in the British Columbia and Alberta. The library’s management team and staff agreed that Thailand Corner was indeed an interesting project for Wood Buffalo Regional Library as its objectives coincided with the library’s policy on the promotion of multiculturalism. The Consulate-General and the Wood Buffalo Regional Library agreed to further discuss in details about the possibility of establishing Thailand Corner at the Wood Buffalo Regional Library.

The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Vancouver initiated Thailand Corner project in Western Canada in 2018. Among various activities organized during this project are the exhibition of books on Thailand in numerous areas such as history, culture, Thai cuisine, Thai boxing, Thai spa and children story tales in Thailand, the display of Thai products and handicrafts, the video presentation of Thai cuisine demonstration, the questions and answers session on Thailand, the Thai food sampling, and the featuring of Thai film. This project aims to promote understanding and appreciation on various aspects of Thailand among Canadians and foreign residents in Western Canada, which will serve as a firm foundation for furthering cooperation in various other fields.
