On 21st September 2015, Mr. H.E. Mr. Norachit Sinhaseni, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, delivered the speech on behalf of H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, on the occasion to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Singapore, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Moreover, H.E. Mrs. Chua Siew San, Ambassador of Singapore to Thailand, including Singaporean representatives of the state and private sectors, and media attended the commemoration.
On the 50th Anniversary, Permanent Secretary and Ambassador of Singapore to Thailand jointly issued a commemorative stamp. As a remembrance of the Golden Jubilee celebration, a joint stamp featured the theme of desserts, which mango and sticky rice represents Thai dessert and sandwich ice cream represents Singaporean dessert. On this occasion, the Singapore Wind Symphony and Thailand’s Silpakorn University, with the support of the Embassy of Singapore, staged a joint musical performance. The event was supported by Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Beverage Public Company Limited, F&N Dairies (Thailand) Limited, and Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Company Limited.
Thailand and Singapore diplomatic relations was established on 20th September 1965, which Thailand is one of the first country to establish the relationship. Both countries has close, mature and comprehensive partnership and continue to exchange high level official visits. Furthermore, both countries were the founders of Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) and continue to cooperate in strengthening ASEAN and security within the region.
In term of investment, Singapore is the number one investor and the 2nd trade partner to Thailand within ASEAN. There were over 800,000 Singaporean visiting Thailand over the past years. Furthermore, both countries have engaged in Singapore – Thailand Enhanced Partnership (STEP), which encouraged bilateral cooperation, such as, Leaders’ Retreat, Civil Service Exchange Programme (CSEP), Singapore – Thailand Enhanced Economic Relationship (STEER) (Thailand will host the 4th STEER this year) and international security cooperation.
H.E. General Prayuth Chan-o-Cha, Prime Minister of Thailand, made several official visits to Singapore, such as, Leaders’ Retreat in Singapore on 11th - 12th June 2015, in accordance to H.E. Mr. Lee Hsien Loong’s invitation, and the commemoration of Singapore 50th Anniversary on 9th August 2015, as a representative of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and a head of government, which further strengthened the relationship.
