On 10 June 2015, H.E. Mr. Saúl Arana Castellón, Ambassador of Nicaragua to Thailand (residence in Tokyo, Japan) and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his visit to Thailand on 7 - 10 June 2015.
The Ambassador of Nicaragua and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand held a fruitful discussion on various aspects of bilateral relations where both agreed that there is much potential to be explored and enhanced, especially in promoting trade and investment between the two countries. The Nicaraguan side informed the Thai side of Nicaragua’s potential, its economic policy and efforts in regional integration within Latin America. Nicaragua is in the process of constructing the Nicaragua Canal, a Mega Project which will greatly contribute to economic growth and jobs creation for Nicaraguans in the future. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand stated that the development in Latin America is very vibrant and interesting. Meanwhile, the Thai government is also in the process of establishing Special Economic Zones along the Thai borders which could also be of interest to investors from Latin America.
The Ambassador of Nicaragua also informed that the Honorary Consul of Nicaragua in Bangkok will bring a delegation of Thai businessmen to Nicaragua to explore economic opportunities in the near future. Additionally, the Ambassador of Nicaragua will discuss with ProNicaragua, the Nicaraguan agency which promotes foreign trade and investment, in enhancing cooperation with Asia. As the economy of Nicaragua is based on agriculture, the Ambassador of Nicaragua is also interested to learn from Thailand the development of agricultural products. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand responded that Thailand will be pleased to share best practices with Nicaragua and Thailand hopes that Thai rice will be able to enter the Nicaraguan market again in the near future.
Both sides shared the same view on the importance of the Forum for East Asian - Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC), of which Thailand will co-chair the 7th FEALAC Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Costa Rica to be held in August 2015.
