General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, will attend the 26th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings, on 26 - 28 April 2015 in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, Malaysia.
The Summit will be the first of two Meetings this year under Malaysia’s Chairmanship. In addition to the Plenary and Retreat sessions of the 26th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN Leaders are scheduled to meet with representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC), ASEAN Youths and Civil Society Organisations in order to promote inclusive participation by all relevant stakeholders in building a truly people-centred ASEAN Community. The theme under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship is “Our People, Our Community, Our Vision.”
The 26th ASEAN Summit will focus on reviewing the developments and progress ASEAN has made so far in ASEAN community building and other related matters that will contribute to the realization of an ASEAN Community by 2015. Another important issue to be discussed is the preparation for the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 which is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues that have impact on the region.
Thailand attaches importance to building a people-centred, rules-based, and inclusive ASEAN Community, promoting connectivity in all dimensions and ASEAN Centrality in the regional architecture, strengthening the capacity of the agricultural sector and SMEs, managing the negative impacts of connectivity, promoting cooperation on security and addressing non-traditional security challenges, as well as the role of Thailand as coordinator for ASEAN-China relations.
During the Summit, three outcome documents proposed by Malaysia namely 1) Kuala Lumpur Declaration on a People-Centred ASEAN, 2) Langkawi Declaration on Global Movement of Moderates, and 3) Declaration on Institutionalising the Resilience of ASEAN and Its Communities and Peoples to Disasters and Climate Change will be adopted by ASEAN Leaders. The Prime Minister of Thailand will also use this opportunity to have several bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines of the Summit.
On March 2015, General Prayut Chan-o-cha will attend the 9th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Summit (IMT-GT) in Langkawi, Malaysia. The Summit will also be attended by Mr. Joko Widodo, the President of Indonesia, , Dato’ Sri Mohammad Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mr. Stephen Groff, Vice-President of ADB, and Mr. Le Luong Minh, ASEAN Secretary-General.
