At the invitation of H.E. General Tanasak Patimapragorn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, H.E. Mr. Robert Dussey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of Togo, paid an Official Visit to Thailand from 11 – 14 February, 2015. He was accompanied by a delegation of high level officials as well as Togo’s leading businessmen.
On 13 February 2015, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand hosted a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Togo. The Board of Investment of Thailand also co-hosted the “Togo Economic Day” jointly with the Togolese delegation on the same day in Bangkok. It was a successful event in which the Togolese delegation presented the overview on investment opportunities and business climate in Togo to interested members of the Thai private sector, followed by a session of business matching.
During the bilateral meeting between the two Foreign Ministers, both sides discussed issues such as bilateral cooperation, economic cooperation, multilateral cooperation, technical cooperation and maritime security.
On economic cooperation, both sides hoped that bilateral trade would continue to further expand for the mutual benefit of both countries. In this connection, both sides agreed to encourage their private sectors to learn more from one another about investment opportunities in their respective countries, which could be done by exchanging visits, organizing economic road shows, etc. The Thai side also appreciated that Togo has been a regular importer of Thai rice for years and expressed its readiness to supply more rice for Togo in the future.
Both sides took note with satisfaction that Thailand and Togo have enjoyed good cooperation and supported each other in the multilateral platforms. In this connection, Thailand thanked Togo for the latter’s commitment to support Thailand’s candidature for UNSC non-permanent membership for the term 2017 - 2018. The Thai side also requested Togo’s support for Thailand’s candidature for reelection to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs for the term 2016 – 2019.
The Government of the Republic of Togo seized this opportunity to thank the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for granting scholarships to officers of Togo in different areas under TICA programme.
During this visit, three memoranda of understanding were signed, namely:
- The Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Togo;
- The Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Government of the Republic of Togo on Technical Cooperation;
- The Memorandum of Understanding between the Chamber of Commerce of Thailand and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Togo.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Togo’s visit to Thailand, the first high-level official visit between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1986 was a success. The two sides had fruitful discussion on various issues of mutual interest. The visit is a major step in further enhancing the Thai-Togolese relations and cooperation for the benefit of the two countries.
