On Friday, 21 November 2014, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Science and Technology co-hosted the first Science Diplomacy for National Competitiveness Workshop at the Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre at Central World, Bangkok. This event convened the nation’s most preeminent authorities relevant to science diplomacy in order to discuss the latest issues in this highly evolving and dynamic field. Approximately 250 guests attended the event, with participants from the public, private, and academic sectors.
During the opening session, Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister of Science and Technology, and H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, jointly presided over the event. In his opening address, the Minister of Science and Technology stated that science, technology, and innovation are at the core of increasing Thailand’s competitiveness. It is imperative to boost the country’s research and development to one per cent of GDP. Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Don emphasized the importance of science diplomacy in not only raising Thailand’s profile but also helping to surpass the middle income trap.
The morning session consisted of a panel discussion on “The Overview and Direction of Global Science, Technology and Innovation Affecting Thailand’s Economic and Foreign Affairs”, moderated by Mr.Chutintorn Gongsakdi, Director-General of the Department of International Economic Affairs. The distinguished speakers spoke on key areas such as global trends in science and technology, possible cooperation with other countries, as well as challenges Thailand is facing and must overcome.
During the afternoon session, the participants were separated into six groups, including 1) Agriculture and Food, 2) Life Sciences, 3) Energy and Climate Change, 4) Infrastructure and Technology for the Manufacturing Sector, 5) Infrastructure and Innovation for the Digital Economy, and 6) Human Resource Development and Education. Each group received significant participation and constructive contribution that will help shape the country’s Science Diplomacy strategy.
This workshop marks a step towards a fundamental collaboration between two ministries, both at the policy and operational levels. The result of this workshop will outline ways to promote of science, technology, and innovation for the advancement of the country. The exchange of ideas at this event will also lead to a future focus group as well as other activities to help foster growth in this exciting new field.
