Thailand elected as International Telecommunication Union Council Member (ITU Council) for the 9th Consecutive Term

On 27 October 2014, at the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference (ITU-PP 14) in Busan, Republic of Korea, Thailand was elected ITU Council Member for 2015-2018. 

An election for the ITU Council, which consists of members from five regional groups, was conducted during the conference. Thailand was one of the 18 candidates for the ITU Council Member in Region E (Asia/Australasia) competing for 13 seats allocated for the region. 

Throughout the election campaign, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been assisting Ministry of Information and Communication Technology continuously and actively. As a result, Thailand received a total number of 108 votes, coming 11th in the election for Region E. Other than Thailand, China, Republic of South Korea, Indonesia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Philippines, India and Pakistan were also elected in the Regional Group. 

Thailand has been ITU member since 1883, and has actively participated in  ITU’s activities. Furthermore, Thailand has hosted a number of ITU related events throughout the years on a regular basis.  ITU has established its Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, since 1992.

The Thai delegation to the ITU-PP14 consists of Minister of Information and Communication Technology and Ambassador of Thailand to the Republic of Korea as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, NBTC, CAT, and TOT, who have worked closely in campaigning for the election.
