On 22-26 September 2014, Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations Office in Vienna, led the Thai delegation to attend the 58th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which took place at the UN Office in Vienna.  The Thai delegation comprised representatives from the Office of Atoms for Peace, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Thai delegation participated actively in the meeting, reaffirming Thailand’s commitment and readiness to work closely with the IAEA and the international community on issues of nuclear safety and security as well as the promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy.  HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha delivered a statement stressing the above commitment and readiness of Thailand at the international, regional and national levels.  Thailand’s constructive role and contribution included its meaningful proposals and participation at the Third Nuclear Security Summit in March this year in the Netherlands, its support for the progress of the ASEAN Network of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy or ASEANTOM, as well as its continued cooperation with the IAEA on technical cooperation.

On 24 September 2014, HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha also hosted a reception for the diplomatic corps and delegations to the meeting to officially open Thailand’s exhibition titled “Radioactive Waste Management: Control and Care” at the UN Office in Vienna on the sidelines of the General Conference.  The purpose of the exhibition was to showcase and share Thailand’s good practices with the international community.   The reception was also attended by Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director-General of the IAEA, who delivered remarks at the event commending Thailand’s role in the work of the IAEA in the region and internationally.

Thailand has consistently played a constructive role in promoting nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation as well as the peaceful use of nuclear energy.  In this regard, Thailand wishes to make greater contributions to the maintenance of international peace and security, and hopes for a chance to do so, if elected to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term 2017-2018.
