Two English training courses for United Nations Peacekeepers were organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the British Council in Bangkok for 48 Thai police officers and 28 military officers between 20th August - 5th September 2014 and 10th - 26th September 2014 respectively. The training courses consists of two curriculums, one designed to prepare future peacekeepers for their first time deployment in UN Peacekeeping Missions while the other geared towards the training of the trainers, especially those of whom already have experiences in UN Peacekeeping Missions abroad and now serve as trainers for the upcoming generation of Thai peacekeepers.

This is the third consecutive year of this fruitful partnership and cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the British Council. The project aims to provide capacity building for the Thai military and police officers to improve their English language skills, which would enable them to perform their duties in UN Peacekeeping Missions more effectively.

Since Thailand has joined the UN as a member state in 1946, more than 20,000 Thai military and police personnel have been deployed and served in more than 20 UN peacekeeping and related missions. Currently, Thai military officers are serving in UNAMID (Darfur, Sudan), UNMOGIP (India and Pakistan), and UNOCI (Cote d’Ivoire), while Thai police forces are serving in UNMISS (South Sudan), MINUSTAH (Haiti) and UNMIL (Liberia) symbolizing Thailand’s active role in UN Peacekeeping Mission abroad.
