At the invitation of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, H.E. General Tanasak Patimapragorn, Chief of Defence Forces of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, paid an official visit to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to attend the 2nd Meeting of the Thailand – Myanmar High Level Committee (HLC) in Bagan.
The 2nd HLC Meeting was held in Bagan, on 21st August 2014, co-chaired by the Chief of Defence Forces of Thailand and the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services of Myanmar. During the Opening Ceremony, both sides reiterated the strong friendship and close relations between the two Armed Forces, which have been continuously progressing. Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to further enhancing cooperation between both Armed Forces for peace, security, prosperity, and well-being of the peoples of both countries.
During the Meeting, both sides discussed plans to strengthen the relations between the two Armed Forces, including the exchange of visits, the military goodwill sports activities, the cooperation on training and education programmes, the exchange of military trainings, the Navy-to-Navy Talks, the Air Working Group Bilateral Meeting, the military intelligence exchange, and the cooperation on counter-terrorism. The Meeting also agreed to enhance cooperation in other aspects, such as the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, the prevention and suppression of narcotic drugs, as well as to review the MOU on the Establishment of the Regional Border Committee (RBC).
In addition, the Meeting acknowledged the outcomes of the discussion between the Chief of National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), the Chief of Defence Forces, and the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services of Myanmar on 4th July 2014 during the goodwill visit of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to Thailand. The discussion touched upon a number of important issues, notably, the preparation for the eventual return of the displaced persons, the survey and demarcation of boundary, and the cooperation on management of migrant workers.
The Thai Chief of Defence Forces will also pay a courtesy call on H.E. U Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar on 22nd August 2014.
