On 8 July 2014, Thai Ambassador to Argentina, together with other Ambassadors and representative from ASEAN Embassies in Argentina, donated cash, clothes, and other necessary supplies to flood victims of Misiones Province of Argentina.
Mr. Medha Promthem, Thai Ambassador to Argentina, together with Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thao, Vietnamese Ambassador to Argentina, Miss Amelita C. Aquino, Filipino Ambassador to Argentina, and Mr. Buhdi Prihantoro, Chargé d’Affaires, Indonesian Embassy in Argentina, representing ASEAN embassies and communities in Argentina presented cash donations of more than 2,000 USD, clothes, and other necessary supplies collected from ASEAN embassies and friends to local government of Misiones Province for distribution to affected people in the flooded area. Mrs. Julia Perie, Member of the House of Representative from Misiones Province and former President of the Argentina – ASEAN Parliamentary Friendship Group, was the representative from the province to receive the donations.
The flooding incident in northeastern part of Argentina started at the beginning of June 2014 and became worse after heavy rains during the end of the month. People in the Province of Misiones, Corrientes, Formosa, Chaco, and Entre Rios are affected. But Misiones and Formosa are the worst flooded areas. Since it started, it is estimated that about 14,000 people in 5 provinces have been evacuated to safer place. So far the Argentine Red Cross is the main organization that provides help and assistance to the people in the area by distributing food, clothes, medical supplies, and constructing temporary shelters for the victims.
The donation of cash and necessary supplies to the flooded victims reflects the strong ties and friendship between ASEAN countries and Argentina.
