On 28-30 June 2014, General Tanasak Patimaprakorn, Chief of Defence Forces and Deputy Head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) paid an official visit to the Republic of India as guest of the Government of the Republic of India.
General Tanasak attended a wreath laying ceremony to pay tribute to the World War I fallen soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti, and inspected the Guard of Honour at the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of India. He then paid a courtesy call on General Bikram Singh, Chief of the Army of India to discuss the bilateral cooperation in military affairs, including joint military exercises, particularly the upcoming Cobra Gold in 2015.
General Tanasak also met with Mr. Arun Jaitley, Finance and Defence Minister of the Republic of India, where they exchanged views on the issues related to the achieving of comprehensive and sustainable development in Asia. Regarding political situation in Thailand, the Republic of India expressed its understanding and its readiness to support Thailand’s effort towards peace and stability. The cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, and tourism would remain business as usual as the Republic of India had no concern regarding the situation in Thailand. The negotiation on the construction of the highway network linking India, Myanmar and Thailand, expected to be concluded by 2016, was also discussed.
In this regard, General Tanasak expressed his sincere appreciation to the Republic of India for its continuous support to the Royal Thai Armed Forces and for their future cooperation. The Government of the Republic of India also expressed its readiness to receive the official visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on 26 July 2014. A welcoming dinner, with the presence of former Ambassadors of India to Thailand, was hosted in honour of General Tanasak by the Chief of the Army of India.
This visit, which was the first official visit of a foreign delegation to the Republic of India since its current government came to power, had been a success and further strengthened bilateral relations and cordial ties between the two countries and the two Armed Forces. It also attests to the close and cordial relations between the two countries as they share similar history, culture, and traditions. In addition, the two sides hold discussions regarding the cooperation in security affairs and the ongoing joint military trainings.
