On 10th June 2014, the Royal Thai Embassy and the Dipaduttamaramaya temple organized a Thailand – Sri Lanka cultural exchange performances at the auditorium of the temple. The programme included traditional Thai dance and music by the Art Association for Youth, Office of National Culture Commission (AAYONCC) and Sri Lankan cultural performances by students from Gunananda Vidhayalaya and Prince College. Around 300 students and teachers from both schools attended the event.
The Dipaduttamaramaya Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Colombo and crucial for the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand. His Highness Prince Prisdang of Thailand, during his monkhood in Sri Lanka, was appointed as the Chief Incumbent of the temple in 1905-1910 and was the Chief Monk of Ramanna Nikaya and Amarapura Nikaya in Colombo. During his tenure, he provided basic education for the local youth by setting up a kindergarten and elementary school named Gunananda Vidyalaya in the temple premise. Later, to commemorate his keen interest in education, a co-educational school named Prince College was later established in the same area.
Many members of the Thai Royal Family, paid visits to this temple, including His Majesty King Ananda (Rama VIII) and His Majesty King Bhumibol (Rama XI), who both planted the memorial trees there. The temple has also received the Royal Kathin robes from King Bhumibol for 5 times, namely in 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2008.
