On 14th May 2014, Mr. Arthayuth Srisamuth, Director-General of the ASEAN Affairs Department, briefed the Diplomatic Corps on the outcomes of the 24th ASEAN Summit, which was held between 8 – 11 May 2014 at Nay Pyi Taw, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, at the Press Center, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Director-General of the ASEAN Affairs Department said that Mr. Phongthep Thepkanjana, Deputy Prime Minister, attended the Summit as Special Envoy to the Prime Minister and Mr. Sihasak Phungketkeow, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, attended the Ministerial Meeting. The main topics discussed among the ASEAN Leaders were the progress of the ASEAN Community Building as well as regional and international issues. The Leaders also took note on the Foreign Minister’s Statement on the Current Developments in the South China Sea as well as ASEAN Foreign Ministers Statement on the Developments in Thailand. They also exchanged views on the formulation of ASEAN’s post-2015 vision which would be a basis for ASEAN after 2015. At the conclusion, the ASEAN Leaders adopted the Nay Pyi Taw Declaration on Realization of the ASEAN Community to identify priorities for ASEAN this year.
Director-General of the ASEAN Affairs Department also thanked Myanmar for being an excellent host. The ASEAN Chairmanship of Myanmar comes at a critical time as ASEAN is realizing the ASEAN Community next year. Thailand, as a member of the ASEAN, stands ready to support Myanmar in ASEAN Community building’s effort.
