At 13:00 hrs. Mr.Tharit Pengdit, Director-General, the Department of Special Investigations, briefed the press on the outcome of the meeting of the Center For Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) earlier in the day, gist as follows:
First, regarding the election on 2 February 2014, the CMPO has prepared to deploy police and military officers to provide security at the polling stations. CMPO, through high-ranking officers, would negotiate with Mr.Suthep Thaugsuban at the Phatumwan protest site to not obstruct the elections. The negotiations would be witnessed by representatives of the Election Commission (EC), international organizations, including Human Rights Watch, and the media. To the claim of the PDRC that the elections could be voided, the CMPO argued that the EC had already confirmed that the elections may be legally carried out and it was within the capacity of the courts to decide in the future.
Second, regarding financial support for the protest movement, the CMPO had set up a task force led by the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) to monitor wrongdoing by the protest groups and take action against illegal financial transactions.
Third, from 3 February, the functions of government agencies will be gradually restored to provide public services.
Fourth, people affected by the demonstrations had filed complaints and requests to police stations and the Crime Suppression Division. The CMPO would take immediate action in response.
Fifth, the CMPO has assigned the Royal Thai Police and Department of Special Investigations to collect more evidence and will again request the Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for the protest leaders by the afternoon of 30 January.
