The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand will host a Sherpa meeting during 13 – 15 January 2014 in Pattaya in preparation for the Third Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) scheduled to be held on 24 – 25 March 2014 in the Hague, the Netherlands.  Senior officials from 52 countries and 4 international organizations are invited to the Sherpa Meeting, which is expected to conclude discussions on a draft NSS Communique to be adopted at the upcoming Hague NSS.

Thailand attaches great importance to the issue of nuclear security and has participated in the Nuclear Security Summit since its inaugural meeting in 2010 in Washington, D.C., United States of America.  In 2012, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra headed the Thai delegation to participate in the Second Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) held in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Additionally, Thailand’s commitment to enhancing cooperation on nuclear security cooperation is evidenced through its constructive role as active member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its current membership on the Board of Governors (BOG) of the IAEA.  Over the years, Thailand has jointly hosted with the IAEA, various national and regional activities, including meetings and capacity-building workshops.  Furthermore at the regional level, Thailand initiated the establishment of the ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM).
