“Dear Mr. President,
The Government and people of the Kingdom of Thailand would like to express our profound sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of South Africa on the passing away of Mr. Nelson Mandela on 5 December 2013.
During this time of mourning, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of South Africa, particularly with Mr. Mandela’s family. The Thai people share the sense of grief and great loss of the South African people and wish to pay tribute to this great man who has achieved, in his lifetime, much more than any of us can ever aspire to.
Mr. Mandela will always be remembered as one of the world’s greatest statesmen, who has earned his place in history as a champion of democracy, equality, human rights and reconciliation. In the face of great adversity, he persevered and was steadfast in championing these values that bind us in our common humanity. Mr. Mandela’s achievements are testimony to how one man, through sheer courage and faith, can rise up to the challenge and make a difference in the lives of millions in South Africa and countless others around the world.
We in Thailand still vividly recall Mr. Mandela’s visits to our country in 1997 and 2004 as special guest of the Royal Thai Government. His charisma, exceptional kindness and compassion left an indelible impression on all Thais.
Morever, Mr. Mandela’s legacy reminds us that democracy and democratic values can never be taken for granted; instead, they must always be cherished, nurtured and defended. We in Thailand draw inspiration from Mr. Mandela’s lifelong and selfless dedication and efforts to promote a culture of peace, harmony and reconciliation.
Yours sincerely,
Yingluck Shinawatra
Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand”
