Summary of Prime Minister’s Interview with BBC (29 Nov 2013)

·        This Government is in control of the situation and government services continue to be provided. The demonstrators have not been violent and the government is employing a non-confrontational approach and peaceful means in upholding the rule of law.

·        I am confident of the support of the armed forces. As Minister of Defence I trust the Thai army. I am also confident that we have learnt valuable lessons from the past that coups do not solve anything.

·        My Government and I came from elections with the intent to serve this country. What is important is that democratic processes are not compromised and continue. There is also a majority of the population who have given us the mandate to govern.

·        As to suggestions for new elections, what is most important now is to bring calm back to the country. But this should be done based on real dialogue and political consultation between all parties concerned and not short term actions.

·        As to whether or not I will run again for Prime Minister, let me say that the elections never have been about me personally. Whether or not I run for elections will be up to the people. I will always consider what is the best option to serve this country to the best of my ability.
