Thailand signs Mutual Declaration on Malaria Control and Prevention along Myanmar – Thailand Border with Myanmar and USAID

On Friday 26 April 2013 at 14.30 hrs. at Vithes Somosorn Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Piroon Laismit, Director-General, Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA), Mr. Michael Yates,  Mission Director,  U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Mr. U Tin Win, Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand, and Dr. Chanvit Tharathep, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Health of the Kingdom of Thailand co-signed the Mutual Declaration for launching of cooperation project on Malaria Control and Prevention along Myanmar – Thailand Border Areas. During the signing ceremony, Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ms. Kristie Kenney, US Ambassador to Thailand also co-signed as the witness in the Ceremony.

Following the President Obama’s official visit to Thailand in November 2012, TICA and USAID signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on trilateral cooperation as a framework for capacity building and human resource development in Southeast Asia such as lower Mekong countries. The launching of this development project will reflect the partnership cooperation between the relevant parties of Thailand and United States of America by expanding the cooperation to Myanmar. This project is envisaged the very first Thailand - US triangular cooperation after the signing of the MOU. It will generate not only to a better health-care of communities along the Myanmar – Thailand border areas but also to the public health environment of the GMS sub-region at large.
