On 25 September 2020, H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, delivered Thailand’s statement, via pre-recorded video, at the General Debate of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA75).

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of UN Member States’ commitment to multilateralism and global unity in order to respond to the world’s challenges together. The Prime Minister thanked the World Health Organization for recognising Thailand as one of the countries which has provided the most effective response to COVID-19, notably drawing strength from its Universal Health Coverage scheme. Moreover, Thailand stands ready to share knowledge and experiences with interested countries through the Foreign Policy and Global Health (FPGH) initiative. The Prime Minister also stressed that COVID-19 vaccines and medicines should be considered as global public goods so they can be accessible to all, and that the United Nations must play a crucial role on this matter.

The Prime Minister reiterated Thailand’s constructive and consistent role throughout 75 years of her membership of the United Nations in all three main pillars: (1) Peace and Security - Thailand has given importance to disarmament, and has deployed over 27,000 personnel in more than 20 UN peacekeeping missions, which has contributed to sustaining peace; (2) Development – Through various international fora such as the Global South-South Development Expo 2021, which Thailand will co-host next year, and the United Nations Economic and Social Council, of which Thailand is a member for the term 2020-2022, Thailand is ready to share her best practices in sustainable development as guided by the principles of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP); and (3) Human Rights – States must uphold their human rights obligations, and Thailand was the first country in Asia to enact a National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights since 2019.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister also emphasised cooperation between all stakeholders as well as participation of the youth and new generations within the context of the ‘New Normal’ as important forces in building together the future that people around the world want.
